Bringing Hope Behind Bars: Salt + Light Outreach at Centinela State Prison

Cobian's Salt + Light Outreach at Centinela State Prison

The Cobian team recently had the honor of participating in a transformative outreach event at Centinela State Prison in partnership with Dennis Martinez and New Vision Church. Our "Salt + Light" ethos came to life as we joined a passionate group of athletes, bikers, low riders, rappers, musicians, and volunteers, all eager to bring a message of hope, love, and redemption to the inmates.

Upon arrival, the atmosphere was intense but full of promise. While the prison's security protocols served as a sobering reminder of our environment, the energy from the volunteers and inmates quickly filled the yard. We kicked off the day with music, a BMX jump exhibition by Jake Kinney, and performances by Olympic skateboarder Cordano Russell. It was incredible to see prisoners grab skateboards and showcase their skills, creating a vibrant sense of community and camaraderie.

Hall of Fame Skateboarder Dennis Martinez shared messages of hope:

"The moment you were born, every step you took mattered, leading you to this place. God knew you before you were born, and today, He wants you to know that He hasn’t forgotten about you. He loves you, always has, and always will."

Dan McGranahan, a member of our team, shared his personal reflections:

"Going into this, I had some reservations about stepping into a prison, but God spoke something to me. He told me that I spiritually am no different and shouldn't think of myself as such. I may not have committed the crimes they've committed, but I also may not have been handed the life they were given; my personal history had me on a path that would've led to this place from early on, and I'm grateful to say that my submission to God altered that direction for me. I was overwhelmed by gratefulness and a heart to see the people that are incarcerated released from the spiritual chains that were so prevalent".

As the event unfolded, we witnessed the prisoners' genuine excitement and respect. A highlight was a powerful rap session where prisoners took the stage, impressing everyone with their talent. Throughout the day, conversations flowed, and many moments of prayer offered a sense of connection and healing.

Cobian founder John Cobian expressed the impact of the experience:

"It was a powerful experience. I initially felt nervous when walking into the prison, but then I could really feel the presence of Jesus overflowing on the prisoners and all of us who were out there serving. It was an honor and a blessing to share the light of Jesus and encourage the prisoners that the same Hope is available to them every day. It was very impactful, and I had fun. I look forward to putting together another prison outreach event soon".

In the end, the "Salt + Light" outreach was about offering hope to those who feel hopeless, embodying the gospel message of love and redemption. We left Centinela State Prison with full hearts and a commitment to continue spreading light in the darkest places.

The event was a testament to the power of community, faith, and the unwavering belief in transformation. We’re grateful to have been part of this incredible day and look forward to continuing our mission of bringing Salt + Light to those in need.
